This song was actually written after the recording of EOR "Check" in late 1997 with many of the songs that ended up on the UDM "Smash Hits" album. I like it and the recorded quality matched the others so I thought it would have a place in this collection. It was written around the opening bass riff by our long time bassist Billy Pierce. It's kind of screwy- it's not a 4/4 time signature and feels like he's kinda messin' up and adding extra notes at the end of each phrase run. I'd get tapes from him where he'd just turn on the jam box and start rambling all sorts of stuff- literally a full cassette worth of bass lines so it's possible he had no idea he was running the line too long. Not that everything has to be 4/4 I'm just not ready to give him credit for it's quirkyness. Speaking of quirky, everything I did in this song was quirky. Weird drum sounds, steroid induced flanging. Jeff probably heard this and rolled his eyes at the prospect of singing over it, which he never did. All the little lead runs were just spontaneous bursts because it was just a demo. I was basically saying "a lead goes here" because if I didn't Jeff would use up that space for himself. So they are a bit sloppy and kind of "stock" leads but nothing too distasteful. I actually really like this- it's fun!

I actually wrote a song called Panic with Todd Hensley on a project related to a true life story. I actually liked the vocal melody so much that I used it later in a song called Birds Of A Feather. OK, so this really has nothing to do with Tom's Panic. But it is a cool short story. I remember the tapes which Billy Rock-n-Roll used to make for Tom. They literally had stuff on them from tape hiss to cut-off. I almost think he just kept creating without knowing the tape had ended. If you think about it, this proves how much Billy was really into what he was doing. Hence the name, "Billy Rock-n-Roll" There is some funky stuff going on in this piece.
