Music: Mody, Words: Mody

Are we souls just floating?
Leaking air until we're dry.
Are we souls in Rhythm?
One in song 'til the music dies.

Why bother asking. I'd deny I even knew.

Don't catch me if I'm falling. Diving off that mountain side.
If I blackout exalting. Just pull the cord and let me fly.

Don't catch me if I'm falling. I'm a comet streaking in the sky.
Just wait until I'm calling inches from my suicide.

Are we old before we're born?
Static in a moving line.
Are we not old until we've fallen?
Just anywhere, any time.

Someone's always asking about my story, is it true.
If the books been written- I'll rip out a page or two.

Don't catch me if I'm falling head first in the ocean side.
If I blackout exalting just wash me up with the morning tide.

Don't catch me if I'm falling. I'm a bullet on a wild ride.
Just wait until I'm calling. Stray me but an inch too wide.

Maybe I need to know before I'm in disrepair.
Then I can sleep for hours at the wheel without a care.

Don't catch me if I'm falling. Eyes closed in the ever void.
If I blackout exalting don't think that I was paranoid.

Don't catch me if I'm falling. I'm a rocket racing for the prize.
Just wait until I'm calling. Secure that I'm immortalized.

This was the first top to bottom completely new piece of music I wrote for the album. I programmed all the drum tracks without any music in mind- I enjoy doing that because I can work off beats and rhythms instead of riffs. I'm not sure in what order I put in the musical pieces but I did know the song was intended to be somewhat progressive until it got to the chorus and then it was going to get mosh heavy with simple power chords. I probably started the song working out the opening riff which is a pretty cool single note groove. The one thing I'm not happy with is that there are spots where the bass follows the line and not very well- it wasn't easy for a part time bass player like myself to that tight. This song was also the first time in 20 years of recording that I used an acoustic so I had never played one, never recorded one, never EQ'd one. I just ran it direct from the guitar pickup and was disappointed in how dead it sounded but then realized some EQ made a world of difference. There are lots of little things in this song that I really enjoy. The bass under the acoustic parts was all free form and I think very interesting. The odd part of that is that because it was free form and different in each verse when it came time to record the keys I didn't know where the final notes ended and I think if you broke down the acoustic, bass and keys you'd find they end on different notes andf without all three pieces together that it would all be out of key. I think it still is but it kind of tricks you into thinking it's correct. In the overlay guitar harmonies this is the first of many times I wrote each guitar line to drift off from the harmony in spots so as to not exactly synch with each note. But later on I did this in other songs simply because I was too lazy to learn and execute the exact phrasing. The final musical piece was the guitar solo which is just some phrasing with a really cool modulating effect on it. It kind of jumps out and surprises you- maybe that's not a good thing but after a few listens you get use to it. This song went lyricless for a while but this was the song which brought out the realization that thematically we are writting lyrics with some life questions bigger than ourselves. I often cringe with the thought that many people believe everything happens for a reason so if I jumped off a cliff today pre-destiny will kill me or keep me alive. So the song asks "God" is everything pre-planned and if so don't tell me. The cool thing is that in the chorus we're saying "don't catch me if I'm falling (doing something stupid) ... unless of course, I'm about to die... but wait just until the last second so I can still get the rush. I wasn't sure how Jeff should sing the verse melody so he did a great job sofening that up. This does mark the first of my singing perfomances on the album as I did all the chorus parts except for the high overlay parts. Well, it wasn't really singing- just some yelling and talking.

Tom had called me or e-mailed me and told me about this song that he wrote as he was inspired while watching Forest Gump, I believe. He will correct me if I am wrong. I found it to be interesting and strikingly similar in its uniqueness to one of mine and Tom's favorite's from the past, Only Fools. So of course I was excited about collaborating with Tom to structure If I'm Falling. Everything was already in place for me, all I needed to do was some vocal melody, piece it together and sing. Okay, so like I said, it was similar to Only Fools which is unique. It took some work but once it began rolling, it felt good. I came in to the studio one Thursday evening and Tom had laid down a scratch track for the chorus and we both agreed that it was worthy of keeping so all I did was overdub a higher harmony over his because that's what I was hearing in my head. I love the little vocal riffs in between the main chorus lines. They kind of remind of something that KORN might do if they had to write a part for this song. Again, the theme of the song had a place in Tom's vision of the compilation... very cool indeed... it was coming together. The voices I used in the verses may seem a bit soft but it is what I perceived the song had called for. I really dig the arrangement of melody, groove and aggression all in the same song. We have recorded a few songs like that on this collection and it's a refreshing style. I found the acoustic guitar in this song to be quite inspiring so one can only imagine my anticipation to lay tracks down to this piece. We were quite satisfied with the end result although I had expressed to Tom that I thought the intro drums sounded simulated. I think he went back and softened them or something but I am unsure. They seem to blend better than I had originally thought. The bass lines in this song are pretty cool. Tom did a masterful job with them. Vocally, it is not one of my more impressive performances with regard to range and power but I am proud to be able to change it up with depth and feeling. Hopefully, our songs have a little bit of everything for listeners of all walks of life.

Tom's Rebuttle: Damn, that's right, I got the lyrical inspiration from a movie. But it wasn't Forest Gump because that's my alltime favorite movie and I was just telling my wife we haven't watched that in a long time. It was probably some other Tom Hanks movie.
