Music: Mody, Words: Harris

Walking the thin line.
In search of balance. In search of reason
Avoiding the obvious. Out of sight...out of mind
Circumstances.
Time and time again, The words unspoken
Do they exist. but in your head?
The moment of truth. Time to face the music
Make for certain. The lips conceal what's locked inside.

The words. They're only words
Words, lonely words

Do you have something to say?
Your lips are moving but I don't hear you
Will you be speaking today?
Leave a message I'll listen later
The ringing drives me insane. Tell me, what's your game.

The words, The lonely words

Once again. The hands begin to move.
Golden silence. The words are now in digital form.
This language seems to leave you speechless.
Unrecognized - by those - without sight
How can this be right?
Hidden not forgotten. Locked behind a door.
You're the key. Open up, the verb will pour.

The words. They're only words
Words, lonely words

Did you have something to say?
Your lips keep moving but I don't hear you
Will you be speaking today?
Leave a message I'll listen later
The ringing drives me insane. Tell me, what's our game.

The words. The lonely words

See the sign. The writing's on the wall.
See the signs. And writings on the wall.
Listen, hear the quiet whispers passing from soft lips.
The hands now, bound and broken and bleeding from the finger tips.

The words. They're only words
Words, lonely words.

Will you have something to say?
Your lips are moving but I don't hear you
Will you be speaking today?
Leave a message I'll listen later
The ringing drives me insane. Tell me, what's our game.

This music was the first official UDM song ever written without any influence to past projects. I recorded it shortly after the completion of the "Smash Hits" CD in 2002. It's a great indicator of where my head was at the time. I really thought I'd be heading in a more techno metal direction but as so many years went by before we did our next album I rediscovered my "drama" metal roots so this crazy trip of a song was just sitting on my hard drive. I can't even comprehend how I came up with this as memories of recording any specifics has escaped me. At some point during the recording of "Questions for God" I thought maybe we'd have some bonus tracks and because this song has a completely different vibe than what we were recording it was a great candidate as a bonus track. One of the othe reasons I didn't consider it as a main track is that all I had was a 2 track master that I mixed years earlier so it left me little control. Even though it lacks the low end push I got from most of the albums songs- this is ironically the best mixed song on the album as a whole. The heavy guitar in the chorus may be the best sounding "crunch" guitar on the album as well because I was mic'ing through a 4x12 at the time as opposed to using the POD direct. Alot of the guitar in the intro and verses was recorded power chords direct into a Yamaha sampler and then playing the guitar on the song by pressing the sampler buttons or using the scratch function. It's the same choppy techno effect I used for vocals on songs like Prediction... Pain and a few songs on "Smash Hits". Jeff had alot of his melody worked out months before principal recording and every once in a while we'd run through some scratch tracks. It was adaquet, nothing special but I figured I'd let him work it out and if it was just average it wasn't a big deal... it was just a bonus track. Then end result however is much better than I had anticipated if you are into a "trippy" kind of thing and Jeff tweaked his phrasing and harmonies more detailed than I would have which really benfited the song. I added a few spices like the distorted effect in certain phrases in the chorus and the distant scream delivery in the prechorus. The song is so fresh to us right now that we're really enjoying it but over time when these all get old we'll see if it holds up.

Interestingly enough, The Sign is all about how we have the ability to change things, God willing and the fact that every one person has a different take. It is explained in a story through two different points of view. One person has experienced something early on which has rendered them psychologically speechless. The other person narrates their frustration with the issue and explores the many challenges that not only the "psychologically speechless" person struggles with, but also those whom come in contact. One of my favorite lyrical parts of the song is as follows:

"Once again. The hands begin to move. Golden silence. The words are now in digital form. This language seems to leave you speechless. Unrecognized - by those - without sight"

One may interpret "digital form" as a digital language. Not the case. In this case I refer to "digital"- as in the digits on ones hand (fingers...after all, the person is "signing"). Tom will be the first to acknowledge that I like to utilize and scramble words and their meanings. "This language seems to leave you speechless" speaks for itself I believe. But "Unrecognized - by those - without sight" is where the narrator is relaying the message to the person with issue -how can a blind person see sign language?- The same cannot be said of a deaf person and a voice as a deaf person has the ability to read lips...a blind person would have to read "digits". I'm sure there are arguments to this but I am not in the debating business. Perhaps this is not the final chapter of this song and I can explore the other side of the argument in the next chapter. Enough of the lyrical side...now for the other "stuff". This is the song when Tom presented to me that I had mistakenly thought was a song which he wrote for Jamie Robinson (former manager of EOR). We had agreed the next song I would be writing for would be "Jamie's song" as we referred to it. Long story short, I goofed up and wrote to this song now titled The Sign. I really liked the obscure and modern edge to this piece and was eager to get to work on it. As is sometimes the case, I was looking to produce a different or unique voice style for the song. Knowing ones favorite vocalist by their signature is comfortable I know, but sometimes I like to go against the grain and throw people off. Creatively, I'm not into complacency. It is my opinion that people like variety and consistency combined. During recording, I knew what I wanted in my head but sometimes translating that to others and on record can be difficult. In this case, although Tom didn't really understand the direction I was headed, I explained it the best I could and left it for him to digest. When I heard what he had mixed, I had an "eargasm". He not only nailed what I was thinking, he also added some interesting bytes that gave the song more depth and dimension. It really made me like the song more than I had anticipated thinking it was just going to be an okay bonus track. I now wish the song had made the cut in the regular tracks. Perhaps it can be switched with another? Tom will most likely veto that (he is the superior "Dictator"...I am Vice Dictator).

Tom's Rebuttle: I toyed with Jeff's thoughts on this briefly but really the music is of it's own kind and stands better as a bonus track. If Jeff doesn't like that he can read my "digit"- see the sign pal!
