| I first heard this EP when I was living in California. I realized then that maybe I didn't give Jeff a fair shake when he wanted to audition for Torrod 1. However, he probably improved a great deal and that rejection I'm sure motivated him. Not that I was falling on my knees over this (sorry Jeff, that's a cheap shot at one of your most memorable moments) but he was at the same level as everyone else and certainly as I listen back to tapes from that era I would have been lucky to have him as my vocalist. All of us musicians back in good ole' Chenango County didn't have a lot of people pushing our performance skills or any quality people to measure up against but we did know how to write original songs that given the right environment and push from an objective mentor could have made them much more professionaly presentable. Having prefaced all this, this song was okay. If you move on the the Torrod album you'll notice that this song is Terra Incognita, same song, new chorus, new guitarist. If it was ever worth debating I'm curious which one would win out. |

Critical Condition is the only song that has my total stamp on it of these four recordings. I wrote the lyrics which I barely remember doing so. I don't recall where I was physically as well as mentally when I wrote this piece. Simply, I believe it is about close to death experience with the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel", and the struggle to make the decision to follow or stay. I like this song because vocally it possesses power and range which is probably my strongest suit. Andy, Billy, Todd and Chad all stood with me to sing the back-ups to this song which was really fun. At the end of the song, we all kind of did this chatter thing like we were all in agreement and confident about the song or something to that effect. That may seem corny in hindsight but was kind of cool at the time. I wish we had video taped the experience so people could have seen our expressions at the time. We were smiling and joking with a sense of accomplishment. It was a definitive moment.
