| As the years now swiftly pass I know what lies ahead of me, the inevitable. Time has come to use these wings, fly to new horizons.. When I leave this place I'll know I've lived and I have learned. I will bide my time. Time has come and time has gone, now I'll shed these wings, fly away.
In the distance I hear voices from my past. Inside my head they come to haunt me. A gentle whisper tells me I must carry on. Carry on to fill the void.
I now know when I awake at night the cries I hear, no one ever hears.
And all along I've kept it all inside. The pain I feel, no one knows.

| To me this is a musical masterpiece. As you may know we redid this song on UDM "Smash Hits" with more of a steady beat drums and I prefer that to the choppy drums on this version. But from a guitar arrangement it's maybe my best work. The intro harmony is originally part of a long instrumental I wrote in 1988. I actually disected that song and it's parts are scattered about on "the Inevitable". They're on this song of course but also Birds Of A Feather and Only Fools. In my original instrumental this harmony intro was actually a climactic point towards the end. I love it as an intro because I can't really recall any other song I've heard with that extensive a piece at it's start. Now Jeffrey, that point alone should be enough to keep the "I'd prefer it edited" comments to yourself. The song is 75% harmony guitar and uniquely structured to where no section really repeats itself. Another enjoyable writers tidbit is that I actually weave through different harmony combinations- standard harmony, 12th octaves, 7th harmony and maybe 9th harmony. Then of course there's the hammer on tapping harmony which is surprisingly the steady presence in the song. The lead break harmony that is a volume knob fade was actually written by Todd and is an outstanding contribution to the song. But enough about me- Jeffrey, what do you think... |

One of the better songs written for the times. The song is actually about a metamorphosis my subconscious was telling me I needed to experience but I was having difficulty letting go of my past due to some difficult times. I think I will leave it at that instead of breaking it down line for line. It's kind of funny how the word inevitable snuck in to be the album title. I vaguely recall bickering somewhat about the CD title and really have no recollection of how it ended up there. Perhaps Tom can refresh my memory. I can, however, refresh his memory about a musical piece in the song which I do remember quite well. I will take credit for the swelling harmony guitars three quarters of the way through the song. This part of the song seemed empty to me with just the bass and drums playing these repetitive lines. I suggested we fill this section with some tasty guitar riffs as I am a fan of this method (Scorpions do this well with Matthias Jabs). After some thought and attempts and failures, I suggested to Todd that he try this technique which Eddy VanHalen had perfected of the swelling in of his notes. So this would be combining tasty with tricky. After some more attempts and failures, he nailed it and then the harmony was added to it. It turned out to be a neat little piece of the song. At least that is the way I remember it. The structure of this song is very well done. It may be one of our longer tunes but well worth the patience of listening all the way through. Tom did a great job of arranging clean guitar verse and heavy harmony verse. Then a nice bridge harmony which builds into a heavy yet melodic chorus. This arrangement makes for a pleasurable experience for a vocalist. Not only was the creative process from my point of view exciting, the end result is something which I can still listen to today and enjoy. The song would be later visited to re-arrange to what would become Voice of the Past on the Smash Hits CD. I like that version even better.
Tom's Rebuttle: The album title was definately taken from this song at my suggestion and probably at some point my insistance.
