Eyes stared in disbelief at the scene of the crime. Blood stains, there's a witness we can not find. There are no traces. There are no obvious clues. Nations watched in awe of the shattering news.

There's always something there to remind you. You're the witness of a crime. Even though it's a tragic loss. Neglecting duty you leave it all behind. (run)

How long can you keep up this masquerade living your life on the run. Turn your back just walk away. Someone killed the President. Assasign at large. You got a detailed description as you watched them get away.

Oh, the cards are stacked against you, you know.

I wish we had recorded this again. Not that there's anything wrong with this recording but I would like to have played on it. It's a great song that we played live for many years. In fact, Jeff nailed this song every show without fail, particularly that great scream towards the end on "tragic Loss". Though it comes by in a flash I always looked forward to playing the quick harmony riff prior to the first chorus. That little subtlty sets up the whole song, lets people know you are thinking. Lyrically it's just an intersting story you don't hear in too many songs. I think this song more so than Edge of Insanity convinced me that joining Harbinger was worth my time.

I too wish we could have recorded this again. It is probably my favorite tune of the ones which Todd & I wrote. Through time this song evolved to a better polished product than what is on the CD. But that is what happens to everyone with time and experience. So it is what it is. Don't get me wrong, it is still a good recording for its time. The song is about this person who is a lone witness to the assassination of the President of the United States. This witness has to choose between reporting to the authorities and forever living life in the witness protection program or not reporting to authorities forever looking over the shoulder. In this case, The Witness opts for the later and less responsible decision. Billy and Gary did a nice job holding the rhythm section down. Billy ripped through this one pretty decent once he overcame the butterflies. His bass is kind of in your face in certain segments on the recording which is something I kind of wanted to ensure due to him getting the shaft in previous recordings which I did not engineer. He had equal input and I remember wanting to do him justice. It may not have been perfect due to all of the ping-ponging but it was a damn sight better than what he had been dealt in the past. Billy also sang backing vox to this song live. Todd's guitar came off nicely and the harmony piece in the intro is always inspiring. It is something I look forward to with great anticipation when thinking of reviewing the song. I used to entice him to often insert these kinds of little runs as some of my favorite guitarists of the time like George Lynch and Matthias Jabs would often do. It always added depth to the songs in my opinion. This was probably the second tune which Todd and I wrote for the band. Todd had bits and pieces recorded on tape using his jam box and I singled out what would be the opening guitar riff to this song and asked him to build on it. I believe, on that cassette tape he actually played that opening riff just fooling around and then broke off into this arpeggio run. I think he was just warming up because it was in the very beginning of the tape. After we built the song structure, I felt there was something missing that I thought I had heard on his jam tape so listened to that cassette again. There it was that arpeggio run. The only thing I can't remember is if he applied it to the beginning harmony intro or the solo. It probably doesn't matter because the song turned into a work of art. I do however; wish I saved every recording which he would bring to me. Priceless.
