Feel so naked and the river flows away from you. All her tributaries rain anew. And the feeling's coming over me again, take away the pain. Hello sadness! And the feeling's going, getting over pain, taking me away.

Why the tide is always sweeping me away? Far away, far, far, away. Dreams are silhouettes of mountains in moonlight.

In-tuition, all my senses tell me stay alert. All these feelings coming over me again, take away the pain. Goodbye sadness! And the dreams believe me, easing all my pain, taking me away.

Pull me under like the ocean has an untertow. And your dreams you've lost them all.

This song was recorded during the demo's I did which evntually became the album "Word" and the instrumental version of A Way is on that album. It's just a great Drop D riff but this recording did have some problems. I was tracking this in the studio with our drummer Tom Ackerman along to my drum machine version we got off time in some spots. But when you do 8 songs in half a day you just miss stuff and I didn't catch it until I was trying to record my parts and kept stumbling in spots. It's actually my fault because the song needs feel not a click track. It's pretty noticable to me in the slow break section and it drives me nuts but I don't know if anyone really catches it. Another issue I have is that Jeff's verse vocals are too low in the mix. We used a harmonizer on his voice and that helps bring them out a bit but they still are way too low and that's partialy my responsibility but I actually think he doesn't have a problem with it. I like the demo version better. Despite the tempo issues the slow middle break section is pretty cool. I play through the guitar melody sequence then do a harmonic taping instead of picking, one of many techniques Eddie Van Halen made famous in "Dance the Night Away" among other songs. Despite it's slow pace it actually transferred over well live. It was just nice and thick and heavy.

A Way. Well, this is about REM sleep and wrestling with a dream slash nightmare. My translation is a process of moving through sequences from painful experiences on to pleasant experiences. This can go through a number of sequences and then you wake up. My wife and children always get a kick when they hear the opening verse line "feel so naked". We all get to laughing so hard we can't stop. Have you ever had the dream where you are naked...? The meaning in the verse doesn't entirely have much to do with this but I thought of it as I was writing it and thought, perhaps this will be meaningful in different ways to its audience. So perhaps it can be thought of as a colorful metaphor. And yes Tom, I notice the timing thing as I always have, just for the record. It's an interesting song and I actually like it. I do recall having difficulty writing over it. Recording it was weird. I think I got to a point to where I wanted to move to the next song when we were mixing it down. It became boring to me. Perhaps it didn't get the full attention it needed.
