Open the door and step inside. Reflecting in from your deepest fear. Pulling you out of a one-way mirror. Why shriek in terror. Erase human error. Caress the fear. Caress their fear. The freaks are terrified. Give them their freedom.

Lay on the floor. Now play dead. Take one giant step off the universe. Lead a culture of fools that is so perverse. Give me your money. Send me your money. Address the fear. Address their fears. The freaks are zombified. The end is near.

Purple mountains majesty above the fruited plains. America, America, God shed his grace on thee. And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.

I usually have to sift through alot of Billy Pierce's bass lines but this bending bass riff was the first one on his tape of riffs so he must have known it was a good one. One of his best really though it's quite simple, Moving into a more alternative approach I was experimenting with sounds on my Digitech RP-5 floor processor and was finding places to implement those sounds without the heavy distortion. though the song is in Drop D tuning and it does lead with some open D power cords. But my experimentation lead me to some "dirty" clean sounds to chord over the bass lines then kick back into the power chords. The middle lead section is just different ways of bending one note. Was it a rebellion against the over played lead breaks of years earlier or was I mocking the fact that new bands then tended to consider the lead break inconsequential? I don't remember but it's irrelevant because I like it and that's all that matters. I do kind of lead chord through the end of the song as Jeff sings over that. We rarely did that in our writing history. I think this is a great song in every phase, powerful vocals, heavy simple drums, cool bass riff and textured guitar. The only problem is that in the rush of recording Jeff sang the lyrics wrong and we didn't catch it until mixdown. The above printed vocals are how they should have been sung. See if you can catch the error.

Love this song. I know the lyrics are kind of freaky and perhaps deep depending how you interpret. But it really is a song about Americans and their anxieties, greed and the need to lead or follow. Like it or not, our country has become divided. There are people who are compelled to be leaders who value money and power. There are people who are followers not because they are compelled to do so but because they do not have the money and the fact that the power is shoved down their throat whether it's media or politics. Unfortunately, fear is a powerful tool. The followers tend to value family. Can you guess which category I fall in? The author would like to see change as the end of the song would suggest. I kind of ripped it off, within legal limits that is, from historical music. But it is a powerful statement. By the way, the change I would like to see would be that of leadership with family values and equality to every single human being. Of course, as a Martian I could just destroy your planet and be done with it! Just kidding.
