Music: Hensley, Words: Harris
You are all alone now in the shadows of the dark. Have you lost your senses. Hearing creatures you have never heard since just a child. Imagination weakens your defense.

On the other hand you've grown to be a man. The chilling night could not bother anoyone of your precision. But you are afriad of something deep inside. Do you undertsand?

What do you know that we don't know. Is this a nightmare caught in time. Will you ever escape back to reality? I feel it's presence there. A life form surrounding me. Four walls are closing in let me be.

The clothing that you wear all white fits you to a T. Straight jacket and all. The world in which you once knew a hundred years ago is slowly fading from your grip.

You don't know the difference between your nightmares and reality. Your patterns show that you're on the edge of insanity

The studio version was recorded during the original Harbinger demos of 1990 prior to my joining. Todd again wrote a succinct yet viscious song. One thing you hear in alot of Todd's songs is off chording in the break sections building up prior to the solo. This was one of Todd's longer solos but I again wormed my way in by suggesting a complete stop in the middle with me doing a real quick build-up run then Todd continuing on with his solo. Jeff is excellent at bringing in the proper personality to match his lyrics. This song wasn't really the opener it was the second song. A song called The Witness was the opener but the sound man did a poor job getting Jeff in the mix so I did some editing. The intro number that fades in at the start was a separate piece that kicked into The Witness. After The Witness was done Geff gave his little "hello and welcome to the edge of insanity" spiel. Since there was no music playing during that spiel I could cut and paste that over the fade-in intro and then kick in with Edge of Insanity as the opener. The witness is a great song but not usable with inaudible vocals.

First and foremost, I am regretful that we had to cut a few of songs from this CD. The Witness & All Walks Of Life are exceptional songs. 21 Run is also a good song that I wish made the cut. Unfortunately, technical issues beyond our control prevented the songs from making the cut. Edge of Insanity is about anxiety/paranoia from birth and struggling within through adulthood to overcome. The character in the song has a recurring nightmare that he has been in a mental institution since early childhood. With this adding to his disorders, he is losing track of weather he is sane or insane and how long it has been between episodes. He is on the edge of insanity. I remember liking the material which Todd wrote for this one. Todd and I would always collaborate on the structure of the songs he wrote in those days. We didn't have a drum machine and Todd would just write riffs, which by the way, were almost always appealing to my taste. This song just spoke insanity to me. It is in your face with a snappy tempo. It went over well when we played it live. We had played it so long that we had it extremely tight as was the case with most generally all of our songs. Keeping this song in our set list with the addition of Tom to our line up made the song more interesting. We were able then to build on it and also hold rhythm down where lead breaks would be otherwise empty.
