| A word to the wise, you can not disguise what you are inside as I study you. The movements you make, the breathes that you take, I'll catch every step predicting the next.
I slowly match your vibrations. I move as you move, a mirror to open your soul. You liken to my anticipations. Feeling comfort and ease, you show me what I want to see.
Detector of lies unmasking your self reservations. Covertly inside, place down your guard don't deceive. Detector of Lies. Covertly inside.
With ease I now manipulate your verbal lip responses. You're kinesthetic I sense. Almost touching and feeling my words I've spoke unto you. Oh, how I master neural linguistics.
We all try to guard our deceptions. Willful or not we don't always say what me mean. I break down the walls to communication. Feeling comfort and ease you show me just what I need.

| As in Amber Waves I was really cramming alot into songs at this point. Detector of Lies was a prime example though it didn't flow as seamlessly as Amber Waves. I do think with Jeff's melody work I captured what I set out to do. I had taken some classes in a technique called "nueral linguistics" which breaks down relating to other people by learning and mocking one of three subliminal ways in which people respond to communication- audibly, visually or kinisthetic (feel). Fast talkers tend to be visual people and if you wanted to sell them something you would try and match their body language and speaking pace. But in love that same person could respond differently, Maybe a touch holds more weight than words. There is also a method of detecting lies based on eye movemnets while one is relaying a story. So lyrically that's what the song is about. Detecting a person's nueral linguistics and trying to match it to get or learn what you want from them. I think the ebb and flow in the song creates some good tension and as I said, Jeff matched that in his performance. However, the studio version recorded here is a bit stiff. Brian has some great drum work in the erie middle section. He would create different tones on his toms by actually putting his elbow on the tom and moving it from center to edge while playing the same tom with his other hand and stick. He also did a nice job working overhead cymbals in subtle ways for ambience. He was to my surprise having trouble getting the accents correct before the chorus comes in and even on this recorded version they are too rushed. I'm not happy with my guitar tone as I play the opening riff. I can't recall if I had my Marshall 2 x12 combo amp then or if I was still using a Gallein Kruger rack preamp which I used on the Harbinger "the Inevitable" album. I also played the solo which I put towards the end of the song with my pick-up knob in the up position for a bassier tone. I've had the same Lawrence pick-ups in that position for about 20 years. Like the song I'm not sure how well my solo flows in this studio version. I did augment a small thing in 2000 when I put the songs to CD. Right before the solo section Jeff screams "detector of lies" and then there is a dead stop before the riff and solo. I hated that stop and never figured out what delay or reverb to put on his voice there so I made up some crazy effect which it's a bit lame but better than the dead space- though I think Jeff disagrees. This actually was a killer song to play live but we just didn't capture that in this recording but I can live with it for what it is. |

Tom made a believer out of me on this one. Begrudgingly, I obliged to his creation/idea and I have to say when I finally got through it a couple of times, it made sense. Of course I had to edit a little bit, adding here and taking away there and, oh yes, the scream section lest we forget that. It was actually a powerful song to rehearse. And then we played it in front of people to my surprise, people really connected with this song live which gave it even that much more power. I think all of the guys in the band did a spectacular job with this tune. Especially in the middle where there is some rather neat stuff going on. Brian and Billy shine in this song. I think we were rehearsing at Nardi's in when we started rehearsing this song. I do remember Tom, Brian and myself in the creative process for the percussion. Those were fun times. We were proud of ourselves I guess. I like this song soup to nuts although without Tom's explanation, the song may be a little deep to the lay person. One thing though, I didnt know that Tom took this class and that he had this power. I knew he had powers, but not this particular one. Whew! I'm glad I have never lied to Tom's face! Just kidding, I lie to his face all of the time and he never catches on. Just like now. How ironic. By the way, I am partial to the dead space the way it was and disagree with you Tom. Am I lying? What are my eye movements telling you right now you powerless Martian?!
