Music: & Words: Mody (well...not really, just the new arrangement)

Come they told me, Pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, Pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him, Pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Little Baby, Pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, Pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, Pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our King, Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, Rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you, Pa rum pum pum
On my drum.

Mary nodded, Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for him, Pa rum pum pum pum
Then he smiled at me, Pa rum pum pum pum.
Me and my, me and my drum.

Shortly after receiveing the Halford 3 Christmas album "Winter Songs" my wife suggested my daughter should record some Christmas songs and I dilligently went into the studio to do so. She was suppose to sing on this with Jeff but she had little interest and the attempts she made were not whole hearted. I thought about not feeding her until she does it but she was only 7 and they have laws against that kind of thing. She did however do a great job on 4 other songs and did sing with Jeff on "Feliz Navidad" which you can hear at www.antoniamody.com. But as for "Drummer Boy", Jeff himself wasn't overly enthusiastic at the arrangement and was critical of my timing in the song but he knew it was more my little side project and did what I asked and did it really well. This was recorded smack in the middle of recording our acoustic album so it didn't require much shift in mode other than yanking out the ole' drum machine. I actually sang all the intro vocals and the "rum pa pum pum" sections surprisingly as I heard them in my head. Jeff thought it threw the listener too much but I gave him my pat response "I like it so I don't care". But really he was great about doing this and it all came out just as I had heard it in my head. After hearing other arrangements of this over the holidays, I quite like mine with the exception that it lacks a little more build at the end. I tried to find some keyboard parts in the last 3rd of the song to add some drama but came up with nothing. Oh well.

As usual, Tom is right...when he introduced this version of the song to me I was neither inspired nor enthusiastic. But I humored him just the same and struggled through it painfully in the first runs of it. I was however, interested in the idea. It wouldn't have been my first choice for a Christmas song. I just couldn't seem to get past the timing part which was really off the wall...but I should know this by now as it has long been a trademark of Tom's. I usually can figure it out quicker but this one was difficult. Once I deciphered the beginning time on my own without Tom counting it off for me in a different signature, I figured it out enough to make it work. Of course I had to rub it in with Tom and honestly, I wasn't in the best of moods to begin with and this just compounded things to say the least and unfortunately, Tom happened to be on the receiving end of my frustration that particular evening. So he burned me a copy of what we laid down on scratch and I took it home with me. As I listened, I figured it out better. But I played it for a select few close to me and they pretty much told me what I had already concluded about the arrangement... including my 11 year old son who looked at me and said, "Dad, isn't that out of time?" I was almost quick to the defense, as it had my stamp on it...but I caught myself and it brought a chuckle and a smile to my face. Of course, I couldn't wait to speak with Tom to report this. I almost think his daughter Antonia may have said something to the same effect. I'm sure Tom will correct me in his rebuttal. All in all, the arrangement turned out satisfactory and it's yet another permanent record in the UDM history books.

Tom's Rebuttle: Maybe on Mars it's out of time but on Earth 4/4 is a common time signature.
